About me
Yeeman “ManMan” Mui (they/them) is a taiko drumming artist and music educator dedicated to creating an equitable landscape that fosters creativity through multisensory expression. As an Orff Schulwerk certified music educator, their artistic practice actively challenges capitalistic and elitist norms while promoting anti-ableism and celebrating neurodivergence through various forms of play. ManMan’s practice encourages mindful connection with the body, emphasizing the importance of slowing down to cultivate strength both physiologically and psychosomatically, and creating inclusive spaces where all forms of expression are valued.
As a neurodivergent who experienced Situational Mutism, ManMan found their voice through the liberating power of multisensory artistic expression. This journey has been pivotal in transforming their relationship with movement, sound, and community. Their program, Taiko Together, emphasizes student-centered facilitation, where non-verbal communication becomes a fundamental aspect of learning and connection.
ManMan has developed a range of curricula centered on physical and mental wellness, including Rhythmic Flow Taiko—a Parkinson’s-friendly class, Team Taiko at the Grand Vision Foundation, and the Makoto Taiko Senior Program. As a Teaching Artist in Grand Vision Foundation’s Meet the Music Program, they serve marginalized communities in South LA, promoting inclusivity and creative expression. ManMan also co-created the neurodiversity advocacy program “Listening into Silence” with fellow taiko artist Carrie Alita Carter, which highlights the importance of understanding and celebrating diverse communication styles.
In their pursuit of artist-activism, ManMan directed the music production and composed original taiko music for the award-winning documentary **Blurring the Color Line: Chinese in the Segregated South** in 2021. They co-founded Mujō Dream Flight in 2022, creating original works and traditional adaptations in collaboration with other predominantly trans/non-binary taiko artists. They completed their first month-long workshop and performance tour from Los Angeles to St. Paul, MN, entitled “Haimweh,” which translates to "home-longing" in Bavarian. In 2024, ManMan joined Unit Souzou as a touring member for the production "Constant State of Otherness."
Through their work, ManMan continues to inspire others to embrace their authentic selves and explore the healing power of music and movement. ManMan holds an MPhil in Musicology.
