Masami (a.k.a Sammy) hails from Kumamoto in Western Kyushu.
Masami Miyazaki entered the Kodo Apprentice Centre in 1998 and became a Kodo member in 2001. Through many years of domestic and international concert tours, school tours and workshops, she gained a broad range of experience as a performer, instructor, and director.
In April 2014, Miyazaki joined the Kodo Cultural Foundation team as a workshop instructor. Based at Sado Island Taiko Centre (Tatakokan), her work centered on leading taiko workshops and facilitating new programs such as “Exadon,” an innovative taiko program which promotes health and wellness through the art of Japanese taiko drumming. She has been the main instructor, leading the Exadon Facilitator Training Course online and in person.
In more recent years, Masami has been conducting various workshops through the Exadon program focusing on using taiko to prevent frailty, rehabilitation, and community building. In addition to taiko as a musical instrument, Masami focuses her efforts on initiatives that harness the power of taiko to impact communities. She also travels to elementary and junior high schools on Sado Island to teach taiko performance to children.
Always smiling, Miyazaki has an unquestionable ability to make everyone around her feel good. Her sunny, comical character bridges language and culture gaps with ease, making her popular with people from around the world. Masami continues to devise new uplifting workshops for people of all ages to enjoy.
