This workshop invites participants to engage in creative play with texture while exploring different storytelling approaches within Naname choreography. Emphasizing the connection between movement and narrative, the workshop will include a creative exercise inspired by Thomas Locker's poem "Cloud Dance," where participants will collaborate in small groups to create their own arrangements. By exploring the interplay of texture and movement, attendees will unlock new avenues for dynamic expression and storytelling within Naname choreography. This workshop offers a unique opportunity to expand movement vocabulary while deepening the connection between choreography and narrative.

Learn Shamisen for WAISSHO Ondo, a New Bon Odori Song LIMITED
Friday August 29, 2025 8:00am - 10:00am MDT
Join Sumie Kaneko, David Wells, and Isaku Kageyama in a workshop series where participants will be the first to learn WAISSHO Ondo ・ 和一緒 (ワイッショ) 音頭 ・an original song written by Sumie in the style of Bon Odori. This series will focus on learning the taiko, fue, and vocal parts of the song, giving participants a unique opportunity to be the first to bring this new composition to life at their local Obon Festival.

The shamisen class will begin with the basics. As you may know, the shamisen shares similarities with the taiko in its construction and use of bachi. We'll start with how to hold the instrument and then practice basic strokes, such as "don" and "uchikomi" (we'll even incorporate "kuchishoga"!). Once we're comfortable, we'll move on to reading scores. Since the song is new for everyone, I've created two shamisen parts: a beginner part with minimal hits and an intermediate part with more hits. For those who aren't familiar with score reading, don't worry—I'll guide you verbally through the music.

By the end of the series, you’ll have the knowledge and skills to perform a newly crafted song that honors the spirit of Obon. Recordings and practice tracks will be provided. This workshop is open to all experience levels and is designed to foster a sense of community through the shared joy of creating and performing music.

Participants in this workshop are invited to also take "Playing as an Ensemble for a New Bon Odori Song" on Saturday (4:45-6:45), where the drum, dance, fue, narimono, shamisen, and singing parts will come together to play as an ensemble. Participants are then invited to play WAISSHO Ondo for the closing ceremony of NATC Phoenix.

This Ondo is especially made for NATC participants who want to upgrade their musicality by not only playing taiko but also understanding the singing line and shamisen/fue line, so they can play the piece with consideration vertically in the music, not only horizontally playing your taiko part.

Please Bring: Shamisen if you have one. We will have shamisen that can be borrowed for those without.

ShastaYama Odori LIMITED
Friday August 29, 2025 8:00am - 10:00am MDT
ShastaYama Odori is a composition by Russel Baba which uses two simple traditional patterns interlocking to create a new or different overall sound to dance to.

Basic needs are one Odaiko, 2 shime, one chu, atarigane, & fue. Each has a part.

The minimal music parts are for Odaiko/chu, 2 shime, and fue. The parts may be made more complex by adding others for Odaiko and chu or shime and atarigane and/or matsu mushi bells.

ShastaYama Odori was created for audience participation at the ShastaYama Taiko Festival. Toru Watanabe and Michelle Fujii created most of the dance movements which celebrates the Mount Shasta area and nature. Russel Baba added more dance movements reflecting our modern lifestyles of cell phones, pumping gas, and driving. Traditional dance and songs reflect people's lives of fishing, farming, or hoeing or digging. Russel added the modern acts of today.

The piece ends when dancing is done. The chu Odaiko pattern goes one more round and ends the piece.

This workshop can add more participants. There is a minimum required, but no maximum as it is simple and easy to learn.

If one plays ShastaYama Odori, please give Russel credit for the music and give credit to Toru Watanabe, Michelle Fujii, and Russel for the dance choreography.

Prerequisite/What to bring: There are no requirements for participants. Anyone from beginner to advanced will gain from learning ShastaYama Odori. AND it's fun!

Winds of Adaptation – Exploring Scales and Modes for Shinobue Improvisation LIMITED
Friday August 29, 2025 8:00am - 10:00am MDT

105° LIMITED
Friday August 29, 2025 8:30am - 12:30pm MDT
Written during the searing heat of a Tucson summer, 105° invokes the power of the Sonora desert sun. Players move athletically from a naname chu to a yokouchi odaiko, playing them separately and together. The song also has a shime part that holds the jiuchi and provides fills at key moments. Physically demanding, 105° gives players an experiential understanding of the grit it takes to be a taiko player in the desert, be that the desert southwest or a metaphorical desert, a place where taiko has drilled a deep taproot far from its California epicenter. The piece is appropriate for intermediate and advanced players.

The session will begin with a demonstration of the song and discussion of its origins and artistic intent. Participants will then learn the song through active call and answer (both vocal and on taiko). Participants will work in groups of two, alternating turns at the drums and doing air bachi. (The song is very physical and this approach will prevent overexertion.) 105° is released under Copyleft - By Attribution- No Derivatives - Share Alike license, and every participant will have full permission to teach the song and perform it with their groups.

Prerequisite/What to bring: Naname and yokouchi (up drum) fundamentals; ni-dan experience helpful but not required

Becoming Dynamic, Musical Players: Rhythm and Touch LIMITED
Friday August 29, 2025 8:30am - 12:30pm MDT
We taiko players need to be more sensitive!  While taiko is designed for raw power and volume, we play too loud for too long.  While kuchishoga is an amazing tool for learning, we've let it reduce our subtlety and tonal range.

Fortunately, we all possess a well of sensitivity that can guide our playing: our sense of touch. We can train our musicality with the emotional wisdom in our bodies. This workshop maps our sense of touch onto the drum to answer questions like, "How loud?... for how long?... and what next?"

Prerequisites: Open to players of all levels. Musical curiosity required. Workshop will involve self-touch and optional touch of others' hands, arms, shoulders, and heads.

Friday August 29, 2025 10:30am - 12:30pm MDT
This workshop is for people who feel they have an interest in a melody instrument and are willing to try it out and discover new possibilities.

The shinobue seem to be easily included with the Taiko, and somehow, the Shakuhachi has always been forgotten. So we need to correct this lapse in the past 30 years, and along with the Shinobue, we would like to finally give those interested a chance to try the Fue and the Shakuhachi.

This will give you an insight into the different bamboo flutes and styles and help you find what works best for you. We will learn to extract sounds from the flutes, simple basic melodies, and ways to practice on our own or find sources to further our studies.

This is a great introduction to Japanese flutes. Discover the possibilities for making your taiko songs sound better and more musical.

Prerequisite/What to bring: If you have flutes, bring them along. We will have some Fues and Shakuhachi for you to try. Just bring a great attitude and an open mind to discover something new.

Winds of Adaptation – Exploring Scales and Modes for Shinobue Improvisation LIMITED
Friday August 29, 2025 10:30am - 12:30pm MDT

Listening into Silence: Embracing Neurodiversity in Taiko
Friday August 29, 2025 2:15pm - 4:15pm MDT
Join Actually Autistic Artists, Yeeman “ManMan” Mui and Carrie Alita Carter, for an introspective workshop that invites participants to explore the connection between taiko, Neurodiversity, and personal creativity. In a society often focused on consumption, this workshop shifts the focus inward, encouraging participants to reflect on their own unique personal challenges and discover the beauty and resilience that arise.

Our show, Listening into Silence, grew out of our own personal struggles and revelations as we came to understand and claim our true selves. Humans and other life forms have developed coping mechanisms to survive and thrive in desert-like environments. The journey is difficult and, at times, debilitating, and there is beauty in that. It creates the transition from simply existing to prospering.

The session will begin with a powerful excerpt from Listening into Silence that intertwines spoken word and original taiko composition, setting the stage for introspection. Participants will then engage in silent reflection and journaling, using guided prompts to delve into their individual experiences and how these shape their artistic practice.

Through small group discussions and collaborative activities, attendees will have the opportunity to share insights about their own journeys, examining themes such as ableism, disability, and the intersection of neurodiversity and creativity. This workshop welcomes all levels of experience with taiko and encourages a spirit of openness, reflection, and personal growth.

Prerequisites and What to Bring:
This workshop is designed for participants of all backgrounds and experience levels, particularly those interested in exploring the intersection of taiko, neurodiversity, and personal creativity. No prior taiko experience is necessary; however, an open mind and a willingness to engage in self-reflection are essential.

Participants should come prepared with something to take notes with/on (notebook, computer, etc.). Chairs will be provided and if they prefer sitting on the floor, they are welcome to bring whatever would make them more comfortable there (pillow, etc.)

Learn Vocals for WAISSHO Ondo, a New Bon Odori Song LIMITED
Friday August 29, 2025 2:15pm - 4:15pm MDT
Join Sumie Kaneko, David Wells, and Isaku Kageyama in a workshop series where participants will be the first to learn WAISSHO Ondo ・ 和一緒 (ワイッショ) 音頭 ・an original song written by Sumie in the style of Bon Odori. This series will focus on learning the taiko, fue, and vocal parts of the song, giving participants a unique opportunity to be the first to bring this new composition to life at their local Obon Festival.

While your voice is your most accessible instrument, it's also hidden within your body. Similar to how you prepare your taiko and bachi, your voice needs warming up before singing.

The vocal class will begin with exercises to enhance body awareness and prepare your voice for singing, rather than speaking. Once your voice is ready, we'll dive into learning "WAISSHO Ondo," a piece that truly celebrates the power of vocals and kakegoe. Your voice and energy are essential!

Hachijo Daiko ~Finding Your Own Voice~ LIMITED
Friday August 29, 2025 2:30pm - 6:30pm MDT
Description
- When I first visited Hachijo Island in 2012 and played Hachijo Daiko with the locals, I received a comment: "That's not Hachijo Taiko". While Hachijo is known to be an improvisational style played by two players, I was shocked to hear that simply improvising on the Hachijo setup wasn't good enough.
- It is said that islanders are able to recognize the soloist by listening to their rhythms from afar. The focus of this workshop is for each participant to further develop their own Hachijo style through exploration in sound and rhythms. Explore beyond the given roles of the Uwauchi player being the soloist and the Shitauchi player being the base-keeper in the Hachijo setup.
- WS focus/concepts: becoming an "active listener" as the Shitauchi player; incorporating repetition and creating rhythms that feel/sound good to you as the Uwauchi player

Prerequisite Knowledge
- Experience with Hachijo Daiko in the past (preferred, but not required)

Isamigoma-Tonbane Daiko Intensive LIMITED
Friday August 29, 2025 2:30pm - 6:30pm MDT
Isamigoma is one of the classic pieces in the Osuwa Daiko repertoire composed by master Daihachi Oguchi. He created Tonbane Daiko, based on Isamigoma for children and adults to play together, so whole families could experience the joy of playing Taiko. This is a great piece for festivals, for accompanying marathon runners, and for many other occasions, since the length of the piece and the performance set up are very flexible. Since there is a Shinobue part also, Fue players are also encouraged to participate in this workshop.
Although this piece is quite simple and designed for all level players, it requires some details to execute so the paired players avoid hitting each other in the air when it is performed in Tonbane form. While this workshop is also for players who already know the piece, first timers and beginners are welcome to join.

Note: Isamigoma Tonbane Daiko is not an open source piece. All participants are required to keep the original form and not to add their own arrangement or teach to other groups other than their own members.

Prerequisite/What to bring: Can play the rhythm of "tekke tekke tekke tekke" comfortably. Can jump.

In this workshop, we will explore how to transmit this power and authenticity through the taiko. More than just technique, we will learn to play with our soul, creating genuine and moving connections with those who listen. Saturday August 30, 2025 8:00am - 10:00am MDT
This is a new public domain piece for the taiko community! I wrote Commotion back in 2008 for San Jose Taiko and it quickly became a festival favorite. It’s a high-energy piece on betta and shime-daiko that runs just under 4 minutes. It’s easy to learn but also a good workout! Instead of musical solos, Commotion has several bursts of improvised movement as players get from one drum to the next – hence the title, “Commotion!” Designed to be played with a minimum of 7 people and scaleable, this song is both as fun to play as it is to watch.

Learn Shamisen for WAISSHO Ondo, a New Bon Odori Song LIMITED
Saturday August 30, 2025 8:00am - 10:00am MDT
Join Sumie Kaneko, David Wells, and Isaku Kageyama in a workshop series where participants will be the first to learn WAISSHO Ondo ・ 和一緒 (ワイッショ) 音頭 ・ an original song written by Sumie in the style of Bon Odori.

Canvas, a song about a painter
Saturday August 30, 2025 8:00am - 4:15pm MDT
"Canvas" is a brand-new song, never seen or played before. It was created specifically for NATC 2025 and will never be taught again (at least not by us).

The song tells the story of a painter striving for perfection in pursuit of his masterpiece. But is that enough? Is that attainable? Why does it always seem like something is missing? In a moment of frustration and anger, the painter begins to strike at his painting, destroying everything he has worked so hard for. With all that rage now on the canvas, what does the painter see?

Participants are free to rehearse, teach, and perform this song with their groups.

Please Note: This class counts as 6-hours for participants regarding your class selection. (You will have the normal lunch break; we just can't make the block discontinuous in Sched.)

105° LIMITED
Saturday August 30, 2025 8:30am - 12:30pm MDT

Saturday August 30, 2025 8:30am - 12:30pm MDT

The title, loosely translating to "See you later," serves as a reminder that while everyone has their own journey, goodbyes are not forever, and we can look forward to our next encounters.
This piece was created as a gift for Puna Taiko, the taiko group based in Kea’au, Hawaii, where Fred began his taiko journey, marking a farewell before his studies abroad in Japan.

Learn Shamisen for WAISSHO Ondo, a New Bon Odori Song LIMITED
Saturday August 30, 2025 10:30am - 12:30pm MDT
Join Sumie Kaneko, David Wells, and Isaku Kageyama in a workshop series where participants will be the first to learn WAISSHO Ondo ・ 和一緒 (ワイッショ) 音頭 ・ an original song written by Sumie in the style of Bon Odori.

Taiko Based Exercise LIMITED
Saturday August 30, 2025 2:15pm - 4:15pm MDT
The purpose of this workshop is to help participants experience a short taiko-based exercise routine, and have them create exercises they can bring back home. An initial offering of this workshop was shared as the first kaDON live Zoom workshop during the stay-at-home order. This class offers a way to train and learn movement patterns that are commonly used by kumidaiko players in America by breaking it down in a biomechanical format that you can do when you don't have access to a taiko! It’s important to understand that every group plays differently and every body is different, each group’s exercise may look slightly different to reinforce participants’ respective established form.

This is not taiko, but it is a way to give your body the physical movement during times when you’re unable to touch a taiko drum with your group. Exercises are thought out based on my background in athletic training, an allied health profession that works with musculoskeletal injuries. However, this course is not meant to provide healthcare, but with the goal of keeping you healthy.

Prerequisite/What to bring: Towel, shoes to move around in, water, request to inform me about anything that may make this routine difficult. Must be okay with being on the floor or will need to perform modified (not as difficult) exercise.

Taiko and ‘Other’ Intimacies: ‘Racist Love’, Techno-Orientalism, and Taiko Futures LIMITED
Saturday August 30, 2025 4:45pm - 6:45pm MDT
Taiko and ethnic studies has a long and enduring relationship in the context of North America. It is imperative, given the current climate of political precarity, to understand not only the ways in which racial dynamics operate within taiko spaces, but to understand taiko and race through relational lenses. From 'Racist Love' to techno-Orientalism, taiko remains a critical site of analysis for reckoning with the intimacies of race, gender, and other axes of power. My work situates taiko within foundational ethnic studies concepts such as Orientalism and intersectionality to build an understanding of the political opportunities and limitations that taiko makes possible. The discussion portion following the lecture provides a space for community members to ask questions and to participate in conversations at the forefront of ethnic studies and how it continues to shape the legacies and futures of taiko in the United States.

Prerequisite/What to bring: There is no prerequisite knowledge or personal equipment required for this discussion.

Beginners flute playing that includes Fue and Shakuhachi
Saturday August 30, 2025 4:45pm - 6:45pm MDT

ShastaYama Odori LIMITED
Saturday August 30, 2025 4:45pm - 6:45pm MDT

The first step is always the hardest, and I want to help participants take that step. Music comes from within, but we often create so many barriers for ourselves that block it from flowing out. 105° LIMITED
Sunday August 31, 2025 8:30am - 12:30pm MDT

Hachijo Daiko ~Finding Your Own Voice~ LIMITED
Sunday August 31, 2025 8:30am - 12:30pm MDT

Drills for Skills – Building Strength and Precision in the Desert
Sunday August 31, 2025 10:30am - 12:30pm MDT
In environments where resources are scarce, perseverance and discipline are key to success. Drills for Skills focuses on honing fundamental drumming techniques—timing, sticking, bachi control, and coordination—through structured, repetitive practice. Just as the desert demands focus and resilience, systematic drills build rhythmic vocabulary, musical flexibility, and concentration, allowing taiko players to thrive even in challenging circumstances.
This workshop will explore how to develop strong, adaptable taiko skills both individually and in group settings. By learning how to practice effectively and incorporate drills into your daily routine, you'll gain the tools to thrive in any environment, no matter how limited the resources. Whether practicing solo or as part of a group, this session will help you build the strength and precision needed to succeed under any conditions—just like life in the desert.

Improvisation, Spontaneous Creativity LIMITED
Sunday August 31, 2025 10:30am - 12:30pm MDT
We improvise daily. We make plans. Things come up. We make adjustments or change plans.

As children "playing" we did not need a workshop. If my friend held up the tea pot, I knew instinctively to hold up the tea cup and sip some imaginary tea, or when a friend held up a stick it may change into a sword and I would react by finding my own stick (sword) or the stick morphed into a rifle and we'd shoot and die. Didn't need a workshop to know how to die.

Improvising is reaction to action (or no action, which is "action"). Ideas are built on ideas. Inspiration comes from inspiration.

What do you see and hear? How do you react? What are YOU doing? AND are you listening? Seeing? Are you aware of what is happening and what choices and possibilities you have? No reaction is okay too, but for a conscious reason to perhaps create space or space for others to add to or express. We can also react predictably or unpredictably (throw a curve ball) to see or hear the reaction. These reactions could inspire new ideas, ways, or paths to explore.

What is the total sound? We can improvise right away without training or time and energy spent, but the more one practices improvising, the better it gets and "vocabulary" is developed with the practice of skill as well as improvising to answer or react with some weight or experience.

This workshop is an introduction to improvisation for taiko. Exercises in counting, listening, and creativity will be introduced. Soloing is only one form of improvising. We hope to delve deeper in improvising involving several drummers to collectively come up creatively with something together.

Participants may take whatever they want from the workshop.

One DOES NOT NEED TO INCUDE IMPROVISATION OR SOLING IN PERFORMANCES, but practicing improvisation DOES IMPROVE ONE'S MUSICIANSHIP and AWARENESS and eventually will improve presentation or performance. Improvisation also may keep things fresh or refreshed and challenging.

PRCACTICING IMPROVISING MAY CREATE NEW IDEAS OR COMPOSITIONS.

A good understanding of taiko basics may be good for this workshop, but not required.

Prerequisite/What to bring: An improvisation handout will be required for each participant.

Foundation of Taiko drumming LIMITED
Sunday August 31, 2025 2:15pm - 4:15pm MDT
Foundations are the most important and most difficult aspect of learning Taiko drumming. This will take a longtime to perfect however there are many key points.
In this workshop we will learn the most important fundamentals, focusing on the three core elements of sound, movement and ensemble.
It all begins with knowing the good sound, before we can produce the good sound only then can you produce the good sound on a high-quality drum.  The compelling power of taiko comes from both the body’s physicality and the expression of emotion while playing the instrument.
Together we will learn traditional Japanese movements of cultural ceremonies and folk art/music and integrate these elements with our contemporary ideas. Through the love of and practice of taiko we can increase awareness and understanding of Japan and its people, Nikkei (of Japanese ancestry), and Asian culture as a whole.

Taiko JABS (Joint mobility Alignment Balance Stability) LIMITED
Sunday August 31, 2025 2:15pm - 4:15pm MDT
Carrie Alita Carter’s Taiko JABS program is specifically designed for taiko players, emphasizing the vital connection between body awareness and dynamic performance. Taiko JABS increases the range of motion of the body’s joints, challenges balance, stabilizes the core, and improves alignment.

The workshop will begin with a brief gentle taiko session to establish a baseline. Participants will then engage in the Taiko JABS program, which includes joint isolation exercises and stretches aimed at building strength, increasing body awareness and enhancing mobility. This is an introduction to a program that, if practiced regularly, will lead to a stronger core, increased flexibility, and better alignment, resulting in improved performance dynamics. After the Taiko JABS session, we’ll return to the drums to experience the difference in fluidity and expressiveness.

Drawing from my personal experience with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), I developed Taiko JABS over 12 years, while navigating the compounding of a lifetime of unexplained injuries. When medical professionals repeatedly indicated there was "nothing wrong" with my body, I took it upon myself to explore ways to reduce pain and prevent injury. This journey of self-discovery informed the evolution of Taiko JABS, as I learned what worked, what didn’t, and how to create modifications that make this program accessible for everyone, regardless of their physical challenges.

By emphasizing core activation, joint articulation, and overall body awareness, participants will leave with practical tools to enhance their physical capabilities in taiko and beyond, resulting in more expressive and resilient performances.

In line with the conference theme, "Taiko in the Desert," this workshop acknowledges the challenges taiko players may face, including physical limitations and the need for adaptive strategies in resource-constrained environments. By fostering strength and flexibility through the JABS program, participants will learn how to thrive in demanding conditions, embodying the resilience and ingenuity that the desert represents.

Prerequisites: Participants should have a basic understanding of taiko drumming techniques. Prior experience in any form of movement or dance is beneficial but not required. A willingness to engage in physical activity and exploration of body awareness is essential.

All participants should come with a pair of bachi.

If possible, please bring: Yoga or exercise mat, thera-band or towel at least 110 cm long

Skinning Taiko: For why? For when? LIMITED
Sunday August 31, 2025 2:30pm - 4:30pm MDT
Did you want the highest pitch/ the most bounce/ for the lightest weight bachi?
The tenor sound that doesn't make ears wince indoors? Or the thick heavy skin that can handle 'Ushi-Goroshi' ( cow-killer ) bachi?

When do we hope it will sound great?(1 year, 3 years, 6 top 10?)
Is the goal a looser or softer skin(auditory kindness indoors)? How loose is too loose ? - for skin #1? - for skin #2?
How soon would you like it? How many extra steps are we willing to add? Can we sacrifice the longevity of the skin to get there sooner? Can we add weight to the skin and give it deeper tone?
What factors can we bring to the table? What extra steps? What risky techniques?

Intro to Release LIMITED
Sunday August 31, 2025 2:30pm - 6:30pm MDT
Written in 2008 by Diana Wu, “Release” is the wild and crazy signature piece of Naruwan Taiko of San Diego. The name of the piece represents what taiko is for so many people: a way to access their full energy potential and release it outwards, thus sharing that energy with their team and audience. In this workshop, participants will develop an understanding of the musical, physical, and, most importantly, expressive elements integral to fully present the shape of Release. Mastering these elements will equip taiko players in not just performing Release, but also reach greater heights in playing freely and elevate their skills and confidence in engaging taiko performance. Specific elements that this workshop will cover are intention of sound, use of space in choreography, versatility of expression, engagement of core for endurance, and utility of voice in boosting each other. Through this packed workshop, participants will experience unlocking not only their own energy potential, but also fully awaken the energies of those around them.

Isamigoma-Tonbane Daiko Intensive LIMITED
Sunday August 31, 2025 2:30pm - 6:30pm MDT

Taiko and ‘Other’ Intimacies: ‘Racist Love’, Techno-Orientalism, and Taiko Futures LIMITED
Sunday August 31, 2025 4:45pm - 6:45pm MDT

This workshop is designed for those looking to improve their overall musicianship. Through ear training and a foundational understanding of rhythmic theory, participants will learn to identify common taiko idioms and apply them to their own playing. By honing your transcription abilities, you'll discover how to thrive creatively using a seemingly limited set of idiomatic vocabulary.

Learn Shamisen for WAISSHO Ondo, a New Bon Odori Song LIMITED
Monday September 1, 2025 8:00am - 10:00am MDT

105° LIMITED
Monday September 1, 2025 8:30am - 12:30pm MDT

Monday September 1, 2025 8:30am - 12:30pm MDT

This is a special workshop being offered by visiting artists from Hiroshima, Japan, who have an ongoing relationship with taiko groups in the Phoenix area. This is part of a series of workshops being offered by groups that have deep connections to taiko in Phoenix through relationships with Esther Vandecar, who studied with these groups in Japan and become a pioneer of the taiko community in Phoenix.

Hiroshima Hozonkai will share music from their region and their approach to taiko.
