About me
Rome Hamner (she/her) has performed and taught taiko for 25 years. During this time she launched and co-directed multiple organizations and served on the TCA Board of Directors from 2015-2021 and as General Manager of San Jose Taiko from 2017-2024. Performance highlights include drumming while suspended 200ft above an audience of 20,000, playing at international festivals, televised performances, and combining circus and fire arts with taiko.
In addition to her extensive performance experience, Rome holds an Orff certification and has developed hundreds of programs for learners of all ages. She's taught taiko in public schools, including Title I schools, private schools, and in community and after-school settings, as well as in tribal and rural communities. She has a unique ability to compose Taiko pieces that challenge and reward the intermediate player, and her songs are played in at least 6 US states and 3 countries.
Rome was a selected artist for PASIC 2019 (Percussive Arts Society International Convention) and the Smithsonian Folkways Certificate Course in 2021. She also presented at the CA State Music Educators Conference (2020), Beyond the Drum (2021), and at various other conferences, including NATC. She believes passionately in the power of taiko to improve your life, no matter how old you are when you start. Rome currently performs with Mukaro Taiko, TaikoSOBA, Jun Daiko and occasionally with Queer Taiko.
