Commotion (public domain piece)
Saturday August 30, 2025 8:00am - 10:00am MDT
This is a new public domain piece for the taiko community! I wrote Commotion back in 2008 for San Jose Taiko and it quickly became a festival favorite. It’s a high-energy piece on betta and shime-daiko that runs just under 4 minutes. It’s easy to learn but also a good workout! Instead of musical solos, Commotion has several bursts of improvised movement as players get from one drum to the next – hence the title, “Commotion!” Designed to be played with a minimum of 7 people and scaleable, this song is both as fun to play as it is to watch.

Prerequisite/What to bring: 1 pair regular bachi
1 pair shime-daiko bachi

Learn Shamisen for WAISSHO Ondo, a New Bon Odori Song LIMITED
Saturday August 30, 2025 8:00am - 10:00am MDT
Join Sumie Kaneko, David Wells, and Isaku Kageyama in a workshop series where participants will be the first to learn WAISSHO Ondo ・ 和一緒 (ワイッショ) 音頭 ・ an original song written by Sumie in the style of Bon Odori. This series will focus on learning the taiko, fue, and vocal parts of the song, giving participants a unique opportunity to be the first to bring this new composition to life at their local Obon Festival.

The shamisen class will begin with the basics. As you may know, the shamisen shares similarities with the taiko in its construction and use of bachi. We'll start with how to hold the instrument and then practice basic strokes, such as "don" and "uchikomi" (we'll even incorporate "kuchishoga"!). Once we're comfortable, we'll move on to reading scores. Since the song is new for everyone, I've created two shamisen parts: a beginner part with minimal hits and an intermediate part with more hits. For those who aren't familiar with score reading, don't worry—I'll guide you verbally through the music.

By the end of the series, you’ll have the knowledge and skills to perform a newly crafted song that honors the spirit of Obon. Recordings and practice tracks will be provided. This workshop is open to all experience levels and is designed to foster a sense of community through the shared joy of creating and performing music.

Participants in this workshop are invited to also take "Playing as an Ensemble for a New Bon Odori Song" on Saturday (4:45-6:45), where the drum, dance, fue, narimono, shamisen, and singing parts will come together to play as an ensemble. Participants are then invited to play WAISSHO Ondo for the closing ceremony of NATC Phoenix.

This Ondo is especially made for NATC participants who want to upgrade their musicality by not only playing taiko but also understanding the singing line and shamisen/fue line, so they can play the piece with consideration vertically in the music, not only horizontally playing your taiko part.

Please Bring: Shamisen if you have one. We will have shamisen that can be borrowed for those without.

Let’s play “Tsuki no sabaku (Desert Under the Moon)” with shinobue! LIMITED
Saturday August 30, 2025 8:00am - 10:00am MDT
"Tsuki no sabaku (Desert Under the Moon)" is a beautiful Japanese melody composed by Suguru Sasaki in 1923. I'll be creating a shinobue sheet music for the song and teaching it phrase by phrase. Since it contains up to kan on 4, it's best if participants are intermediate shinobue players. They are welcome to bring any hon choshi shinobues. And to wrap up, we can all enjoy a mini-performance at the end of the workshop.

Prerequisite/What to bring: This workshop is intended for intermediate shinobue players who can play up to kan on 4. Participants should bring their own shinobue, but they also have the option to purchase a Suzuki plastic shinobue from me, provided that they have the ability to play it.

Canvas, a song about a painter
Saturday August 30, 2025 8:00am - 4:15pm MDT
"Canvas" is a brand-new song, never seen or played before. It was created specifically for NATC 2025 and will never be taught again (at least not by us).

The song tells the story of a painter striving for perfection in pursuit of his masterpiece. But is that enough? Is that attainable? Why does it always seem like something is missing? In a moment of frustration and anger, the painter begins to strike at his painting, destroying everything he has worked so hard for. With all that rage now on the canvas, what does the painter see?

Participants are free to rehearse, teach, and perform this song with their groups.

Please Note: This class counts as 6-hours for participants regarding your class selection. (You will have the normal lunch break; we just can't make the block discontinuous in Sched.)

105° LIMITED
Saturday August 30, 2025 8:30am - 12:30pm MDT
Written during the searing heat of a Tucson summer, 105° invokes the power of the Sonora desert sun. Players move athletically from a naname chu to a yokouchi odaiko, playing them separately and together. The song also has a shime part that holds the jiuchi and provides fills at key moments. Physically demanding, 105° gives players an experiential understanding of the grit it takes to be a taiko player in the desert, be that the desert southwest or a metaphorical desert, a place where taiko has drilled a deep taproot far from its California epicenter. The piece is appropriate for intermediate and advanced players.

The session will begin with a demonstration of the song and discussion of its origins and artistic intent. Participants will then learn the song through active call and answer (both vocal and on taiko). Participants will work in groups of two, alternating turns at the drums and doing air bachi. (The song is very physical and this approach will prevent overexertion.) 105° is released under Copyleft - By Attribution- No Derivatives - Share Alike license, and every participant will have full permission to teach the song and perform it with their groups.

Prerequisite/What to bring: Naname and yokouchi (up drum) fundamentals; ni-dan experience helpful but not required

Becoming Dynamic, Musical Players: Rhythm and Touch LIMITED
Saturday August 30, 2025 8:30am - 12:30pm MDT
We taiko players need to be more sensitive!  While taiko is designed for raw power and volume, we play too loud for too long.  While kuchishoga is an amazing tool for learning, we've let it reduce our subtlety and tonal range.

Fortunately, we all possess a well of sensitivity that can guide our playing: our sense of touch. We can train our musicality with the emotional wisdom in our bodies. This workshop maps our sense of touch onto the drum to answer questions like, "How loud?... for how long?... and what next?"

Prerequisites: Open to players of all levels. Musical curiosity required. Workshop will involve self-touch and optional touch of others' hands, arms, shoulders, and heads.

Learn Shamisen for WAISSHO Ondo, a New Bon Odori Song LIMITED
Saturday August 30, 2025 10:30am - 12:30pm MDT

While your voice is your most accessible instrument, it's also hidden within your body. Similar to how you prepare your taiko and bachi, your voice needs warming up before singing.

The vocal class will begin with exercises to enhance body awareness and prepare your voice for singing, rather than speaking. Once your voice is ready, we'll dive into learning "WAISSHO Ondo," a piece that truly celebrates the power of vocals and kakegoe. Your voice and energy are essential!

By the end of the series, you’ll have the knowledge and skills to perform a newly crafted song that honors the spirit of Obon. Recordings and practice tracks will be provided. Taiko Based Exercise LIMITED
Saturday August 30, 2025 2:15pm - 4:15pm MDT
The purpose of this workshop is to help participants experience a short taiko-based exercise routine, and have them create exercises they can bring back home. An initial offering of this workshop was shared as the first kaDON live Zoom workshop during the stay-at-home order. This class offers a way to train and learn movement patterns that are commonly used by kumidaiko players in America by breaking it down in a biomechanical format that you can do when you don't have access to a taiko! It’s important to understand that every group plays differently and every body is different, each group’s exercise may look slightly different to reinforce participants’ respective established form.

This is not taiko, but it is a way to give your body the physical movement during times when you’re unable to touch a taiko drum with your group. Exercises are thought out based on my background in athletic training, an allied health profession that works with musculoskeletal injuries. However, this course is not meant to provide healthcare, but with the goal of keeping you healthy.

Prerequisite/What to bring: Towel, shoes to move around in, water, request to inform me about anything that may make this routine difficult. Must be okay with being on the floor or will need to perform modified (not as difficult) exercise.

Winds of Adaptation – Exploring Scales and Modes for Shinobue Improvisation LIMITED
Saturday August 30, 2025 2:15pm - 4:15pm MDT
Just as the desert presents unique challenges that demand adaptability, the world of music offers an array of scales and modes that can expand your musical expression and improvisational ability. This workshop focuses on using different scales and modes in shinobue playing to unlock new pathways for improvisation, enhancing your musicality and flexibility.
Through a series of practical exercises, participants will explore how varying scales, from traditional Japanese modes to more contemporary approaches, can add depth and color to their playing. By learning how to navigate between these modes and improvise with confidence, players will gain the tools to thrive creatively in any musical environment, much like how life flourishes in the desert’s sparse landscape. Whether you're looking to improve your solo performance or collaborate more dynamically with ensembles, this workshop will help you harness the versatility of the shinobue and find new dimensions in your music.

Taiko and ‘Other’ Intimacies: ‘Racist Love’, Techno-Orientalism, and Taiko Futures LIMITED
Saturday August 30, 2025 4:45pm - 6:45pm MDT
Taiko and ethnic studies has a long and enduring relationship in the context of North America. It is imperative, given the current climate of political precarity, to understand not only the ways in which racial dynamics operate within taiko spaces, but to understand taiko and race through relational lenses. From 'Racist Love' to techno-Orientalism, taiko remains a critical site of analysis for reckoning with the intimacies of race, gender, and other axes of power. My work situates taiko within foundational ethnic studies concepts such as Orientalism and intersectionality to build an understanding of the political opportunities and limitations that taiko makes possible. The discussion portion following the lecture provides a space for community members to ask questions and to participate in conversations at the forefront of ethnic studies and how it continues to shape the legacies and futures of taiko in the United States.

Prerequisite/What to bring: There is no prerequisite knowledge or personal equipment required for this discussion.

Beginners flute playing that includes Fue and Shakuhachi
Saturday August 30, 2025 4:45pm - 6:45pm MDT
This workshop is for people who feel they have an interest in a melody instrument and are willing to try it out and discover new possibilities.

The shinobue seem to be easily included with the Taiko, and somehow, the Shakuhachi has always been forgotten. So we need to correct this lapse in the past 30 years, and along with the Shinobue, we would like to finally give those interested a chance to try the Fue and the Shakuhachi.

This will give you an insight into the different bamboo flutes and styles and help you find what works best for you. We will learn to extract sounds from the flutes, simple basic melodies, and ways to practice on our own or find sources to further our studies.

This is a great introduction to Japanese flutes. Discover the possibilities for making your taiko songs sound better and more musical.

Prerequisite/What to bring: If you have flutes, bring them along. We will have some Fues and Shakuhachi for you to try. Just bring a great attitude and an open mind to discover something new.

ShastaYama Odori LIMITED
Saturday August 30, 2025 4:45pm - 6:45pm MDT
ShastaYama Odori is a composition by Russel Baba which uses two simple traditional patterns interlocking to create a new or different overall sound to dance to.

Basic needs are one Odaiko, 2 shime, one chu, atarigane, & fue. Each has a part.

The minimal music parts are for Odaiko/chu, 2 shime, and fue. The parts may be made more complex by adding others for Odaiko and chu or shime and atarigane and/or matsu mushi bells.

ShastaYama Odori was created for audience participation at the ShastaYama Taiko Festival. Toru Watanabe and Michelle Fujii created most of the dance movements which celebrates the Mount Shasta area and nature. Russel Baba added more dance movements reflecting our modern lifestyles of cell phones, pumping gas, and driving. Traditional dance and songs reflect people's lives of fishing, farming, or hoeing or digging. Russel added the modern acts of today.

The piece ends when dancing is done. The chu Odaiko pattern goes one more round and ends the piece.

This workshop can add more participants. There is a minimum required, but no maximum as it is simple and easy to learn.

If one plays ShastaYama Odori, please give Russel credit for the music and give credit to Toru Watanabe, Michelle Fujii, and Russel for the dance choreography.

Prerequisite/What to bring: There are no requirements for participants. Anyone from beginner to advanced will gain from learning ShastaYama Odori. AND it's fun!
